Openlaw - Summary of Changes

Openlaw is continually enhanced with new releases emerging at intervals.

The last main version upgrade was in Autumn 2006. The list below show the main changes since that new release.

Main Additions

Image Handling

If you just want a single set of images, in the Case images folder, the simplicity of Openlaw  works as before - images put in the case images folder are found automatically.

However, you can now set up named 'sets' of images (Image Sets) each of which may have one or more named 'locations' (Image Set Locations) where the images are held.  This allows great flexibility.

Image Sets

The standard names given for Image Sets include:

Case Images

Redacted Images

Annotated Images

which illustrates how one might want to keep different sets of images for a Case

Add uses the default image set location for the current Image Set.

Image Set Locations

The locations of the Images for any Image Set can now be in separate locations for different Items.  Thus Items with TIF images might be in one folder, and Items with PDF image sin another.  Native images might be in a third.

The only rule is that any single Item may only have one location for an Image in each Image Set.

Basic Verify functions are now built in to Openlaw

It should no longer be necessary to run Case Setup Verify after moving a Case to a new location.

Printing and other Outputs

These have been grouped together on a new screen reached from the Bundles screen, so that  all the steps needed to produce an index and printed copy of a Bundle may be done from a single screen.

Exporting

The exporting options have been added to the Bundle Output screen mentioned above.

Equivio Equisets

Openlaw  now supports the display of Equiset information and the use of Equivio's Text Compare utility to review similar documents in the same Equiset.

Import - from Access

Openlaw Case Builder now supports import from flat file databases of most Openlaw fields, Equivio Equiset information and MetaData for the Openlaw MetaData fields in the third row of Tabs - see Import - from Access for further details

LiST Data Exchange Protocol Proposals

The standard Openlaw fields, together with the Openlaw MetaData fields, can now hold all the information required for the proposed data exchange standards set out in the List LiST GROUP Draft DATA EXCHANGE PROTOCOL PARTS 1 and 2 on DISCLOSURE DATA (v 1.4 and 1.3 respectively) both of 27 April 2007.

Minor Enhancements

More Licence switches

There are several new licence switches to control access to certain functions.

Bundles Screen

This has been rearranged for greater clarity

Ad hoc Bundle

There is a new option to create an Ad Hoc bundle by typing in a series of Item numbers.

Need for Exclusive Use reduced

The requirement for exclusive use has been removed for many functions, although it's use is encouraged.

Parsing is automatic

Names parsing now happens automatically after editing names.

Names - Cast List parsing

There is a new screen which allows you to type in (or cut and paste) a list of names for the Case (the 'cast list').  These are immediately parsed and added to the Names database, and thus available for future searching and data entry.

Page Counts

This function has been enhanced so that you can also check the dpi of each image and whether it has a portrait or landscape orientation.

Numerous small user enhancements

In addition, we are adding to our range of Openlaw Add-Ons with Openlaw Electronic File Cataloguer and Openlaw Names Manager and with enhancements to our Barcoding and other software tools.
