View / Edit - Item Links Tab

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Item Links are just that - links between Items. Each such link must have two sides - Has as a copy / Is a copy of, or Refers to / Is referred to in are two examples. You can define your own Item Link Types. Any one Item may have any number of different Links to any number of Items.

The most common Item Link Type in lists of documents is the relationship Has as an Attachment / Is attached to. An Attachment is a document which is linked to another document, usually by being enclosed with or pinned to it.

See the Manual section Adding and Editing Item Links for an explanation of the buttons along the bottom of this tab. Click on the button in the picture above to go straight to the relevant section.

Note the message at the top right of the Item Card....

.... which shows you that there are Item Links even if you are not on the Item Links Tab.  In this case, the message reflects the fact that this Item is the child of one document (Item 4) and the parent of another (Item 17).

You can see the image of an Item Link (if there is one) by high-lighting the reference to it. This leaves you on the current Item Card but displays the image of the Attachment. Right-click on an Item Link row, or click on another tab to revert to the image which belongs to the current Item Card.

You can move to a Linked Item by double-clicking on the reference. If that Linked Item itself has Item Links, you can move to them. If the Linked Item is not in the current Selection, you are asked if you want to add it to the Selection.

The need to itemise Item Links will differ from case to case. If you want to do so, there is a powerful function for the purpose. If you just want to get a List served, the tab can be ignored - you can always set up Item Links after Disclosure if the case runs.

Attachments

The Item Link Type Has as an attachment / Is attached to is different in kind to any other Item Link Type. It is recognised by Openlaw as having a particular significance. Attachments are treated no differently on the Tab but there are programmatic implications. Follow the green links below for a full explanation of these implications.

Notes:

In List / Privileged / Review

Each Item has its own settings for these on the Main Tab - indeed, part of the point of the Item Links functions in Openlaw is to enable you to code parent and child documents differently. The system includes warnings if you seek to print a Report covering a mixture of Privileged and Unprivileged documents, but it is up to the user to ensure that Privileged documents are not inadvertently disclosed by being shown as Attachments to unprivileged documents.
