System Requirements

Openlaw is a Visual Basic 6 application using Access databases for data storage and standard Windows components supplemented by those installed in the setup routine.  It will run on any version of Windows since Windows 95. The older your version of Windows the more likely it is that you will need additional or updated components. These are usually installed by the installation process.

Openlaw will run on a Pentium II with 64MB memory and 25MB disk space for the Demo Case.  A more realistic minimum for Windows 2000 and later versions of Windows is a P4 with 128Mb of memory.

You also need a CD player unless Install is to be run across a network or is done from the Web.

A 15” monitor is adequate but 17” is better. Openlaw works in Windows 95, or 98, or Windows NT 4.0 with System Pack 3 at least, Windows 2000 or Windows XP (but see below as to Viewing Files - TIFF Images).

A printer must be installed even if it is not present – the screen display of Reports requires this.

As with any other database application, the more resources you give it the better. If the system is to filter thousands of Items and pull up large images, then a P4 processor or better, with 256Mb memory or more, will be required.  The disk storage space will vary with the Case. A full Case with thousands of Items might require hundreds of Megabytes for the data and several Gigabytes for the images. Network and disk drive speeds, graphics cards and other hardware components all play their part, but processor and memory are the most important elements.

Additional Reports (which are optional) require that Microsoft Access 2000 or later is installed.

The Standard Reports (which include variants on a listing for Disclosure and export to Microsoft Word or Excel) are built in.

See the sections headed Viewing Files - Tiff Images for the requirements for .tiff image viewing and Viewing Files - Other File Types for non-tiff files.
