Parsing Names

 

There are several fields in Openlaw whose contents you can replace with other contents. The Manual section Find and Replace describes each of them. This section is devoted solely to the function to replace one Name with another.

The sections on Names and on Parsing names show that Names can be entered via the Names Menus or they can be typed in and parsed automatically by the system.

It is possible that names might be mis-spelt throughout a Case with many entries. For such circumstances, there is a function to find and replace names. For it to work, both the old and new form of the name must exist in the list of Stored Names.

In this example, the incorrect name has a mis-spelling of Chuck Stein's surname and omits his title. The replacement name also exists as a Stored name either because it has been correctly entered elsewhere (so both variants exist in the data) or because the correct version has been entered manually as a Stored Name via the Names Menus.

Select the name you want to change in the top box. Select the new version or replacement name in the bottom box. Press <Find and Replace>. The old name will be removed from every Item in your current Selection and replaced with the new name. By default, if the old name is no longer referred to in any Item it will also be removed from the lists of names and will no longer appear in picklists. If you want to keep the old version of the Name, you must un-tick the box with the legend "and then delete..."
